The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Chargers watched Elijah Jones slide 30 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Reaching for Eguakun left real value on the table behind him. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Chargers indulged a want in Solomon while a need in edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get a security blanket over the middle at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A quiet steal in slot 37: Troy Fautanu for less than the market said. The roster fit checks out.
Xavier Legette at No. 69 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 6 on Javon Solomon with edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Marist Liufau in pick 139 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Daijun Edwards at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Elijah Jones at pick No. 223 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Kingsley Eguakun in the 256th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
