Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent pick No. 256 on DeMonte Capehart, a name most had 42 spots down the list. The bottom line is a respectable B.
However the rest shakes out, Dial at that price is a win they earned. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get a cornerstone up front. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Adonai Mitchell at the 56th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Payton Wilson in pick No. 87 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid sticker price for MarShawn Lloyd in Round 4, Pick 25, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good price on Roger Rosengarten in No. 183, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value said wait; Trevor Keegan in the 213th overall pick says they were not listening. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Marcellas Dial all the way to the 223rd overall pick, and they scooped it up. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jontrey Hunter at slot 242 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
DeMonte Capehart at the 256th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A need, and now a little less of one.
