Somebody in slot 225 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chargers sat still while Tahj Washington, the No. 189 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The cost of the Jackson reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
Bottom line, with Troy Fautanu leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 26 they get a blindside protector at fair value.
A big swing on Zach Frazier at the 37th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Malachi Corley at slot 57 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jeremiah Trotter Jr.. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They left a pile of value on the table to take McKinnley Jackson this early at pick 89. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They read the board right and Khyree Jackson was the payoff at No. 105. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Circle this one: Javon Baker at the 110th overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They liked Isaiah Davis enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 140. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jordan Jefferson in No. 181 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Tahj Washington still on the board at slot 225. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Tarheeb Still is a better player than the Round 7 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
