The Chiefs put a flag in the ground for J.C. Davis, 33 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Ponds falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. It is not that Ponds is a bad player; it is that the Chiefs had louder needs to answer first. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 9 they get a press-man option on the boundary. Need was not the driver here.
Omar Cooper Jr. at Round 1, Pick 29 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Emmanuel Pregnon in the 40th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking D'Angelo Ponds at cornerback with quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots open.
A big swing on J.C. Davis at pick 109, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Malik Benson at pick No. 148 squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A premium they did not need to pay, Kaleb Elarms-Orr a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach for Dae'Quan Wright in No. 176; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kaelon Black at pick 210 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
