You can usually follow a front office's logic. This one is harder. The Chiefs spent the 90th overall pick on Maason Smith while tight end, quarterback and other spots sat unaddressed.
For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Jones pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Getting Henderson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Xavier Legette at slot 35 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Payton Wilson went about where he belonged in the 64th pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in pick 90 leaves tight end, quarterback and other spots for later.
No edge and no loss on Blake Fisher in No. 95; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
James Williams in the 133rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylen Wright at pick No. 158, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, LaDarius Henderson at Round 5, Pick 36. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Christian Jones at slot 188 is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Omar Speights at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
Walter Rouse at the 250th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
