The Chiefs torched the value chart for Javontae Jean-Baptiste, taking him 44 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. The process wobbled, and the D- is where it lands.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
They paid sticker price for Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 1, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Braden Fiske at the 58th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 64th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Malik Washington. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Josh Newton in pick 126 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Malik Mustapha at the 132nd pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at slot 173 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
