The tape said wait; the Chiefs did not. Joey Slackman went at Round 7, Pick 1, a good 25 picks before the board was ready. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
The Gordon II pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on T.J. Sanders in the 64th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ollie Gordon II at pick No. 69 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Xavier Nwankpa all the way to No. 96, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They reached a country mile for Blake Miller at the 128th overall pick, and the board is aghast. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, Anthony Belton at Round 5, Pick 32 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Joey Slackman well ahead of where he belonged. A need, and now a little less of one.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Francisco Mauigoa. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
