The Chiefs went off the board in a big way for DeVere Levelston, 110 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Colson.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Value with a capital V on Junior Colson in the 64th overall pick, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They did well to land Dominick Puni in the 95th pick, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 4 slot with a little surplus value in Johnny Wilson. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nice patience on Josh Newton, who had no business lasting to pick No. 132. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Xavier Thomas at pick 159 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Fabien Lovett at Round 5, Pick 37 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
DeVere Levelston at slot 252 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
