Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chiefs were there to profit. Tylan Grable, the No. 232 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 252nd pick.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. They went 2 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Worthy at No. 64, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Nice patience on Khyree Jackson, who had no business lasting to pick 95. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jamari Thrash at Round 4, Pick 32 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kitan Oladapo at the Round 5 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Tykee Smith slid further than he should have, and the 173rd overall pick is lovely value for the safety. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
They robbed the room for Tylan Grable here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
