The Chiefs put a flag in the ground for Michael Wiley, 45 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Rouse pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
Nothing to complain about; Adonai Mitchell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A wild overpay on Brenden Rice in pick 64, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Johnny Wilson at the 99th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on James Williams at No. 104, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jarrian Jones in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jordan Travis this early at pick No. 138. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Xavier Thomas in pick No. 159 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zion Tupuola-Fetui. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Walter Rouse at Round 6, Pick 3. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jaylan Ford in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A real head-scratcher, Michael Wiley in No. 252 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
