You can hear the double-takes from here. The Chiefs took Aaron Casey at Round 7, Pick 32, roughly 38 spots before his name belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. With wide receiver, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.

The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.3 · Pick 35 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 26
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cooper DeJean at the 35th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.17 · Pick 81 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 75
A want over a need in slot 81: Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback while wide receiver, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
R3.27 · Pick 90 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 98
Christian Mahogany in the 90th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 106
They paid a round early for Braelon Allen in pick No. 95, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · Elijah Jones · CB · rank 116
A surprising call. With wide receiver, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent No. 132 on Elijah Jones, a cornerback they were not short of.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Kitan Oladapo · S · rank 154
Fair-plus on Kitan Oladapo, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 175
Layden Robinson in No. 173 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Aaron Casey · LB · rank 290
Aaron Casey at the 252nd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
