You can hear the double-takes from here. The Chiefs took Aaron Casey at Round 7, Pick 32, roughly 38 spots before his name belonged. The bottom line is a respectable B.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it. With wide receiver, tight end and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
The Jones pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Cooper DeJean at the 35th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
A want over a need in slot 81: Mike Sainristil adds a cornerback while wide receiver, tight end and other spots keeps waiting.
Christian Mahogany in the 90th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid a round early for Braelon Allen in pick No. 95, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
A surprising call. With wide receiver, tight end and other spots still to address, they spent No. 132 on Elijah Jones, a cornerback they were not short of.
Fair-plus on Kitan Oladapo, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
