You can usually follow a front office's logic. This one is harder. The Chiefs spent No. 133 on Johnny Dixon while tight end, quarterback and other spots sat unaddressed. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Every board in the league had Baker lower, and that gap is the story.
On value alone, Newton makes the weekend a net positive. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get a matchup problem out wide at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Mekhi Wingo at Round 2, Pick 32 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They read the board right and Josh Newton was the payoff at the 95th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Johnny Dixon adds a cornerback and leaves tight end, quarterback and other spots untouched.
They went early on LaDarius Henderson in pick No. 158, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid up for Javon Baker at No. 172 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Solomon Byrd at the 210th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Trevor Keegan in pick 250 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
