You build a draft on nights like this. Jaylin Simpson had no business being available in the Round 5 slot, and the Chiefs did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The cost of the Ugwoegbu reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st pick they get a weapon on the perimeter, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Roman Wilson at pick 63 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Bucky Irving at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 131st overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on LaDarius Henderson. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jaylan Ford in No. 171 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jaylin Simpson in Round 5, Pick 39 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They left a pile of value on the table to take David Ugwoegbu this early at slot 209. A fine player at a spot low on the priority list.
Good price on Donovan Jennings in slot 252, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
