Thirty-one other rooms let M.J. Devonshire slide, and the Chiefs were the ones holding the card at slot 252. Highway robbery.
Reaching for McClellan left real value on the table behind him. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on Kiran Amegadjie in No. 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A conviction pick on Andru Phillips at the 95th pick that the board grades a round light. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and James Williams at the Round 4 slot is the proof. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Jase McClellan in pick No. 159 is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cornelius Johnson in Round 5, Pick 37 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay M.J. Devonshire at the 252nd overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
