It is a puzzling start. The Chiefs had tight end, quarterback and other spots to solve and reached instead for Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE, at the 95th overall pick. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On value alone, Simpson makes the weekend a net positive. The Henderson reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 32 they get juice off the edge. A clean fit for the roster.
A reach for Johnny Wilson in Round 2, Pick 32; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end, quarterback and other spots to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
A quiet steal in the Round 4 slot: Darius Robinson for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for LaDarius Henderson at pick No. 158 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jaylin Simpson at slot 172 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
