Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Chiefs spent pick No. 158 on Jared Wiley, a name the board had a full 42 spots lower. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Landing Mustapha that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Fair-plus on Chris Braswell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A reach for Xavier Legette in the Round 2 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Dominick Puni in the 77th overall pick, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
DJ James in slot 95 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Tykee Smith in pick No. 133 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jared Wiley at the 158th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A safety of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 36 is the definition of value, full stop. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
