Of all the ways to open, the Chiefs chose the head-scratcher, spending the 114th pick on Javon Solomon with interior defensive lineman and linebacker still wide open. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Paul.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get a go-to option on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
Kingsley Suamataia in No. 67 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value with a capital V on Patrick Paul in slot 78, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A surprising call. With interior defensive lineman and linebacker still to address, they spent the Round 4 slot on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
Ben Sinnott at pick 123 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Mohamed Kamara in the 127th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Christian Jones in the 132nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Fair-plus on Luke McCaffrey, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No edge and no loss on Cody Schrader in Round 5, Pick 37; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid sticker price for Sam Hartman in the 252nd overall pick, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
