Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chiefs were there to profit. Cornelius Johnson, the No. 187 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 231st overall pick.
Every board in the league had Flournoy lower, and that gap is the story. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
A perfectly average weekend, for better and for worse.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Ennis Rakestraw Jr.. A minor itch, scratched.
Kris Jenkins at No. 64 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 68th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kiran Amegadjie in pick 72. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tyler Davis at Round 3, Pick 37 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Dylan Laube at pick No. 131 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
Malik Mustapha at slot 158 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A big swing on Jared Wiley at the Round 5 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Cornelius Johnson in No. 231 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Ryan Flournoy in the 252nd overall pick says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
