For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Chiefs walked out of the weekend still thin at tight end, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.
They banked enough surplus on Smith-Wade to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every board in the league had McClellan lower, and that gap is the story.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
They did well to land Keon Coleman in Round 1, Pick 31, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
By-the-book stuff, Brenden Rice at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Tyler Davis in the 94th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cedric Gray. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on LaDarius Henderson at pick 161, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaylan Ford in slot 171 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy bit of business in the 175th overall pick, where Chau Smith-Wade graded well above the range. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jase McClellan at pick No. 209 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The roster fit checks out.
Walter Rouse at pick No. 252 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
