For all the boxes ticked, the Chiefs skipped the loudest one: tight end is exactly as bare as it was. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They will need Jones to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a home-run threat at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Fair-plus on Ricky Pearsall, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Khyree Jackson at pick No. 95 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Good price on Isaac Guerendo in the 132nd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Walter Rouse at pick 159, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A slide stopped in No. 173, with Dwight McGlothern worth more than the price. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Matthew Jones at the 252nd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
