Boards are made to be trusted, and the Chiefs shredded theirs for Marcus Carroll. He came off 38 spots early, and the room will hear about it. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. However the rest shakes out, Mondon Jr. at that price is a win they earned. With tight end and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. More want than need.
A straight-up fair deal on Donovan Jackson at the 64th pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jacobee Bryant at cornerback with tight end and quarterback open.
They paid a round early for Will Sheppard in pick No. 96, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They read the board right and Smael Mondon Jr. was the payoff at the 128th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A conviction pick on T.J. Sanders at pick 160 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Josaiah Stewart in the 188th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Marcus Carroll well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
