The Chiefs put a flag in the ground for Sione Vaki, 44 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Tyler Guyton at the 38th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had Xavier Legette higher than pick No. 61, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Andru Phillips at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Roger Rosengarten. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached a country mile for Jalyx Hunt at No. 103, and the board is aghast. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Leonard Taylor III in Round 4, Pick 6 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Bucky Irving at Round 4, Pick 11 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They talked themselves into McKinnley Jackson at the 125th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Johnny Wilson in pick No. 129. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sione Vaki this early at pick 138. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
