Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Dorian Strong got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the 219th pick. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
The Patriots paired the rookies with proven help, Jordan Addison leading the way.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Josh Simmons and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
They robbed the room for Tyler Warren here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
Jalon Walker at No. 69 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Taking Tre Harris in pick 77 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ozzy Trapilo in slot 97 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nice patience on Savion Williams, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 4. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Dorian Strong at pick No. 219 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor need, but a need all the same.
KeAndre Lambert-Smith in the 240th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board fumbled Jack Kiser all the way to pick No. 243, and they scooped it up. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
