The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Malachi Moore, the No. 94 name on the board, in the 219th overall pick.
The Barron pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots still on the board. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
A reasonable price with a little left over, Travis Hunter in slot 4. A minor itch, scratched.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jahdae Barron adds a cornerback and leaves interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots untouched.
Elic Ayomanor in No. 77 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
JT Tuimoloau in the 105th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 145th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Malachi Moore at the Round 7 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They barely believed it either: Ajani Cornelius still on the board at pick No. 222. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Jack Nelson in pick 240 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
