You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chiefs did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. It lands right in the middle: a C-, no more, no less.
They will need Milton III to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Cowing at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 32 they get a blindside protector, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Keon Coleman in No. 43 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They went early on Michael Hall Jr. in pick No. 64, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Trey Benson went about where he belonged in slot 95. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Theo Johnson in Round 4, Pick 33 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Jacob Cowing, who had no business lasting to the 158th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Joe Milton III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
