It is the swing that defines the weekend: Evan Anderson in Round 7, Pick 25, a good 37 spots before the room expected him. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

That McClellan pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Spending an early pick on safety with tight end open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.25 · Pick 25 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 27
Cooper DeJean in the Round 1 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.9 · Pick 41 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 42
No edge and no loss on Javon Bullard in pick 41; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at No. 58, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 92
By-the-book stuff, Gabriel Murphy at pick No. 88 squarely in line with his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.28 · Pick 91 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 85
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jaden Hicks in the 91st pick leaves tight end for later.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · Tommy Eichenberg · LB · rank 145
Tommy Eichenberg at Round 4, Pick 26 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.33 · Pick 169 · Layden Robinson · OG · rank 175
No drama and no debate, Layden Robinson went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.27 · Pick 202 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 186
Cornelius Johnson at pick 202 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R6.44 · Pick 219 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 196
Jase McClellan at the 219th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.25 · Pick 245 · Evan Anderson · DL · rank 282
This one needs a full-page explanation: Evan Anderson in Round 7, Pick 25, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.35 · Pick 255 · Sam Hartman · QB · rank 259
They took Sam Hartman at par in No. 255, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
