Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Barryn Sorrell at the 148th pick is 135 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Shedeur Sanders is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. That Stutsman pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 1 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kenneth Grant in No. 35. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They liked Tyleik Williams enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good price on Tyler Warren in pick No. 51, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Sampson still on the board at pick 63. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jack Nelson at slot 66 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Andrew Mukuba at the 76th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Savion Williams in slot 86, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cam Skattebo in the 95th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had cheaper options than Domani Jackson at pick No. 118, and it noticed. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Smael Mondon Jr. slid further than he should have, and the Round 4 slot is lovely value for the linebacker. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Danny Stutsman was still sitting there in pick 123, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nicholas Singleton at Round 4, Pick 30 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Barryn Sorrell at No. 148, and the board did not agree. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Miles Frazier at No. 168 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for DJ Campbell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for JJ Pegues in pick 173, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Shilo Sanders in slot 189 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
