You can hear the double-takes from here. The Packers took Trey Taylor at pick No. 243, roughly 54 spots before his name belonged. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They banked enough surplus on Abrams-Draine to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.25
· Pick 25
· Tyler Nubin
· S
· rank 40
In pick 25 they get a rangy last line of defense, even if it was a touch early. More want than need.
R2.9
· Pick 41
· Graham Barton
· OT
· rank 28
Graham Barton is a better player than the 41st pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.26
· Pick 58
· Payton Wilson
· LB
· rank 44
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Payton Wilson in slot 58. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R3.25
· Pick 88
· Cole Bishop
· S
· rank 108
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cole Bishop adds a safety and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
R3.28
· Pick 91
· Kris Abrams-Draine
· CB
· rank 76
Nice patience on Kris Abrams-Draine, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 28. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.27
· Pick 127
· Javon Foster
· OT
· rank 119
A quiet steal in the 127th overall pick: Javon Foster for less than the market said. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.32
· Pick 168
· Dillon Johnson
· RB
· rank 169
Dillon Johnson in pick 168 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.29
· Pick 204
· Tip Reiman
· TE
· rank 224
They talked themselves into Tip Reiman at pick No. 204, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.41
· Pick 216
· Trevin Wallace
· LB
· rank 234
A wild overpay on Trevin Wallace in Round 6, Pick 41, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R7.23
· Pick 243
· Trey Taylor
· S
· rank 297
They left a pile of value on the table to take Trey Taylor this early at the 243rd pick. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
R7.31
· Pick 251
· Tyler Owens
· S
· rank 294
Tyler Owens at the 251st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
