Washington Commanders

The Commanders fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+.

Nobody had David Ugwoegbu this high, and it is not close. The Commanders reached 52 spots to get him at the 181st pick. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. On value alone, Wilson makes the weekend a net positive. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.

They chose more darts over a bigger single swing.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.4 · Pick 4 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 10
In slot 4 they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R1.27 · Pick 27 · JC Latham · OT · rank 18
In No. 27 they get a cornerstone up front, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Bo Nix · QB · rank 22
Bo Nix is a better player than the 35th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 24
The board had Troy Franklin higher than the 36th pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Chop Robinson · DE-EDGE · rank 35
Chop Robinson in pick 40 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
A premium they did not need to pay, Cooper Beebe a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 82
You do not let a cornerback like Mike Sainristil reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 86
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Marist Liufau at No. 102. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 83
Roman Wilson in the 104th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 120
The board fumbled Kris Abrams-Draine all the way to slot 141, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · David Ugwoegbu · OLB-EDGE · rank 233
A wild overpay on David Ugwoegbu in the 181st overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Need-wise, a curious use of the pick.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 275
A big swing on DeMonte Capehart at pick No. 223, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
