The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. Little to argue with here, and the A- says so.
The Williams value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will regret leaving wide receiver for another day if the season turns on it.
The Commanders indulged a want in Smith while a need in wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots stayed open. Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
Good price on Jayden Daniels in pick 11, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taliese Fuaga in the Round 2 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Graham Barton at pick No. 38 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They barely believed it either: Terrion Arnold still on the board at slot 40. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 42nd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 67th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE and leaves wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots untouched.
They took Dominick Puni at par in No. 102, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 130 with a little surplus value in Cam Hart. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaheim Bell in No. 141. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Value with a capital V on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 181st overall pick, a genuine coup. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
They will replay Miyan Williams at pick No. 223 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
