Washington Commanders

The Commanders won the night they stopped Speights from sliding. Grade: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Omar Speights had no business being available in pick 223, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card.

That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Every board in the league had Murphy lower, and that gap is the story.

Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 10
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 25
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jordan Morgan in the 34th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Kamren Kinchens · S · rank 37
Kamren Kinchens in Round 2, Pick 4 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Jonah Elliss · DE-EDGE · rank 44
A straight-up fair deal on Jonah Elliss at slot 40, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 85
Gabriel Murphy at the 67th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 78
They paid a round early for Cooper Beebe in No. 68, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 82
Roman Wilson at pick No. 100 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · DeWayne Carter · DT · rank 101
DeWayne Carter at pick 102 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Marshawn Kneeland · DE-EDGE · rank 106
No drama and no debate, Marshawn Kneeland went about where he belonged in pick 103. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 134
Kamal Hadden in the 141st overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 175
A reasonable price with a little left over, Curtis Jacobs in the Round 6 slot. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Omar Speights · LB · rank 201
Steal is underselling it; Omar Speights at pick No. 223 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
