The Commanders clearly saw something nobody else did in Ahmed Hassanein, taking him 78 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
Strong at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Grey Zabel in the 29th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They will replay Tyleik Williams at pick 61 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy bit of business in slot 79, where Xavier Restrepo graded well above the range. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Ahmed Hassanein at pick No. 148 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Dorian Strong in the 207th pick, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Tonka Hemingway well ahead of where he belonged. The roster fit checks out.
Garrett Dellinger in the 250th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
