If confidence were a draft strategy, the Commanders would have aced it. Tonka Hemingway at pick 203 is 36 spots clear of where he belonged. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They banked enough surplus on Bond to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Armand Membou in No. 29; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They let JT Tuimoloau come to them and pounced at the 61st overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Isaiah Bond at pick 79 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Xavier Scott this early at slot 146. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Tonka Hemingway at the 203rd pick, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
They paid up for Jahvaree Ritzie at pick No. 236 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Miles Frazier reach pick 247 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
