Start where it matters. The Commanders took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
If Fairchild pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Paul at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want.
If Caleb Williams and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.2
· Pick 2
· Caleb Williams
· QB
· rank 2
In the Round 1 slot they get a franchise quarterback at fair value.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Jonah Elliss
· DE-EDGE
· rank 42
By-the-book stuff, Jonah Elliss at pick 36 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Jonathon Brooks
· RB
· rank 62
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jonathon Brooks in Round 2, Pick 8, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Patrick Paul
· OT
· rank 48
Circle this one: Patrick Paul at pick No. 67 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Roman Wilson
· WR
· rank 83
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Roman Wilson in the 100th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Zak Zinter
· OG
· rank 95
Zak Zinter at the 102nd overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.19
· Pick 119
· Jaheim Bell
· TE
· rank 140
Jaheim Bell at No. 119 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.20
· Pick 120
· Darius Robinson
· DL-EDGE
· rank 121
Darius Robinson in slot 120 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.5
· Pick 141
· Cedric Gray
· LB
· rank 135
A clean, defensible pick in the 141st overall pick with a little surplus value in Cedric Gray. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.20
· Pick 156
· Nehemiah Pritchett
· CB
· rank 142
They read the board right and Nehemiah Pritchett was the payoff at pick No. 156. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R6.6
· Pick 181
· Jaylan Ford
· LB
· rank 177
Jaylan Ford at slot 181 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
R7.3
· Pick 223
· Myles Cole
· DE-EDGE
· rank 256
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Myles Cole well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R7.35
· Pick 255
· Mason Fairchild
· TE
· rank 300
Value said wait; Mason Fairchild in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
