You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Commanders did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
They will need Oatis to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
By-the-book stuff, Mykel Williams at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
Luke Lachey at pick 52 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tory Horton in the 68th pick is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jason Marshall Jr.. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They talked themselves into Jaheim Oatis at slot 117, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Terrence Ferguson II at No. 164 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They jumped the gun on Jack Kiser, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A minor itch, scratched.
