The trade table was a mismatch, and the Commanders were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
Spending an early pick on TE-EDGE with tight end and interior defensive lineman open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will need Randolph Jr. to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.4
· Pick 4
· Joe Alt
· OT
· rank 3
In the 4th pick they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
R1.27
· Pick 27
· Taliese Fuaga
· OT
· rank 17
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a building block for the line, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.3
· Pick 35
· Chop Robinson
· DE-EDGE
· rank 35
They paid sticker price for Chop Robinson in pick No. 35, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Kamren Kinchens
· S
· rank 34
By-the-book stuff, Kamren Kinchens at pick 36 squarely in line with his ranking. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R2.8
· Pick 40
· Xavier Legette
· WR
· rank 36
Good price on Xavier Legette in No. 40, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3
· Pick 67
· Cooper Beebe
· OG
· rank 78
Cooper Beebe at the 67th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.37
· Pick 100
· Cade Stover
· TE-EDGE
· rank 94
A curious use of slot 100. Tight end and interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a TE-EDGE in Cade Stover did not.
R4.2
· Pick 102
· Audric Estime
· RB
· rank 98
Audric Estime in the Round 4 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
R4.4
· Pick 104
· Tyrice Knight
· LB
· rank 115
Tyrice Knight at the 104th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.5
· Pick 141
· Keith Randolph Jr.
· DL-EDGE
· rank 154
A premium they did not need to pay, Keith Randolph Jr. a notch or two before his time. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.6
· Pick 181
· Andru Phillips
· CB
· rank 170
They let Andru Phillips come to them and pounced at the 181st overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R7.3
· Pick 223
· Sam Hartman
· QB
· rank 211
Sam Hartman at slot 223 is money in the bank, a quarterback taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
