Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. Cody Schrader, the No. 165 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 3. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. With tight end and quarterback unsolved, spending premium capital on TE-EDGE is the choice that costs them.
Few war rooms will sleep better than this one tonight.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 4, where Brian Thomas Jr. graded well above the range. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had cheaper options than Jackson Powers-Johnson at the 40th overall pick, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value with a capital V on Edgerrin Cooper in slot 67, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Nothing to complain about; Caelen Carson went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A want over a need in the 100th pick: Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE while tight end and quarterback keeps waiting.
Marshawn Kneeland in No. 102 is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a cornerback like DJ James reach pick No. 141 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid sticker price for Jordan Jefferson in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
The board fumbled Cody Schrader all the way to slot 223, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
