The Commanders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Ryan Fitzgerald, the No. 110 name on the board, in the Round 7 slot.
Reaching for Thornton Jr. left real value on the table behind him. The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 29 they get an enforcer at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
They will replay Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Sampson still on the board at pick 79. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 146th overall pick says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 203 is a fall that decides a draft. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
A running back of that caliber at the 236th pick is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Ryan Fitzgerald at Round 7, Pick 31 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
