The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
Every board in the league had Laube lower, and that gap is the story. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McCaffrey.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A real need, handled.
No drama and no debate, Darius Robinson went about where he belonged in the 36th pick. The roster fit checks out.
They paid a round early for Kingsley Suamataia in pick 40, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Patrick Paul at Round 3, Pick 3, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Cedric Gray at the 101st overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They talked themselves into Johnny Wilson at No. 103, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Dylan Laube at pick No. 110 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A need, and now a little less of one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaylin Simpson in the Round 5 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They let Luke McCaffrey come to them and pounced at slot 181. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They did well to land Tyrice Knight in pick No. 220, just ahead of his grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
