The Commanders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Dominic Zvada, the No. 95 name on the board, in pick 236.
Griffith has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Spending an early pick on safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy little value on Tate Ratledge in Round 2, Pick 3, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Armand Membou at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board fumbled Jihaad Campbell all the way to slot 79, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Somehow Gunnar Helm was still sitting there in pick 94, and they pounced on premier tight end value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malachi Moore at the 96th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Andrew Mukuba at safety with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Demetrius Knight Jr. while clear needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots sat open.
Daylen Everette in pick No. 119 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Elic Ayomanor in Round 4, Pick 27 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Oronde Gadsden II at pick No. 146. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Jaeden Roberts in the 156th pick, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached into another round for Thor Griffith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Dominic Zvada at slot 236 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A reach on Garrett Dellinger in pick 247; the board had better options right there. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
