Start where it matters. The Commanders took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.
That James pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Every board in the league had Robinson lower, and that gap is the story.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through interior defensive lineman. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
They read the board right and Jordan Morgan was the payoff at pick 36. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 40th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They liked Cooper Beebe enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 67. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Blake Corum in slot 100 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Darius Robinson in the Round 4 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: DJ James still on the board at Round 5, Pick 5. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Michael Barrett at No. 181 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
You do not let a wide receiver like Isaiah Williams reach pick 223 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
