Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Commanders were there to profit. TreVeyon Henderson, the No. 58 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 107.
The Fleming reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will answer for taking linebacker early while edge rusher and quarterback went begging.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get a ballhawk on the back end, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
Jalon Walker in Round 3, Pick 1 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Donovan Jackson at pick No. 79 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Somehow TreVeyon Henderson was still sitting there in slot 107, and they pounced on premier running back value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tez Johnson at pick 128 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They will replay Mason Taylor at the 130th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A curious use of the Round 4 slot. Edge rusher and quarterback needed the pick; a linebacker in Danny Stutsman did not.
Darius Alexander at No. 134 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Connor Colby. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Davison Igbinosun at pick 203 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Deion Burks in pick No. 236 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Julian Fleming in slot 247, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
