You build a draft on nights like this. Ryan Fitzgerald had no business being available in the 236th pick, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
The Knight Jr. pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with wide receiver, cornerback and other spots still on the board. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The cost of the Dellinger reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 30th pick they get a seam-stretching tight end at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
Jalon Walker in slot 62 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A minor itch, scratched.
They barely believed it either: Dylan Sampson still on the board at the 80th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Demetrius Knight Jr. in pick 107 leaves wide receiver, cornerback and other spots for later.
They robbed the room for Kevin Winston Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Somehow Danny Stutsman was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Luke Kandra in pick No. 150 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Smael Mondon Jr. at No. 203 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, Ryan Fitzgerald in the Round 7 slot, plain and simple. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Garrett Dellinger in Round 7, Pick 31 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
