You build a draft on nights like this. Oronde Gadsden II had no business being available in the 207th overall pick, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. The Winston Jr. pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback, edge rusher and other spots still on the board. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
You do not let a tight end like Tyler Warren reach pick 33 and blink. They did not. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Xavier Watts at the 61st pick is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Somehow Jalen Royals was still sitting there in slot 81, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tez Johnson at the 108th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Ozzy Trapilo in No. 131 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Kevin Winston Jr. while clear needs at cornerback, edge rusher and other spots sat open.
They robbed the room for Cam Skattebo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They barely believed it either: Darius Alexander still on the board at the Round 5 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board fumbled Oronde Gadsden II all the way to the 207th pick, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Robert Spears-Jennings at slot 208 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A linebacker of that caliber at the 238th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A straight-up fair deal on Tonka Hemingway at pick 250, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
