The phones were a trap the Commanders kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The Commanders indulged a want in Stutsman while a need in quarterback, running back and other spots stayed open. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 16th pick they get a blindside protector at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A slide stopped in slot 36, with Emeka Egbuka worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick 39 is fair value, right on his grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Quinyon Mitchell. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Graham Barton in pick No. 100, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, running back and other spots to take Danny Stutsman, a linebacker that was not the priority.
No drama and no debate, Luke Lachey went about where he belonged in Round 5, Pick 8. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Antwaun Powell-Ryland at the 153rd overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They read the board right and Steve Linton was the payoff at pick No. 185. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A clean, defensible pick in the 228th overall pick with a little surplus value in Zy Alexander. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
