The Jack Sawyer selection is the head-turner. The Commanders reached 38 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Whatever Drake Maye becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Kamren Kinchens at the Round 2 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They talked themselves into Jack Sawyer at the 37th pick, and the board did not agree. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Patrick Paul in pick No. 57 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Caelen Carson at Round 3, Pick 4 is a conviction pick that outran the value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyleik Williams. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached into another round for Cedric Gray, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A conviction pick on Connor Colby at pick 141 that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Nothing to complain about; Ricky White went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jase McClellan at Round 7, Pick 5 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
