The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
However the rest shakes out, Milton at that price is a win they earned. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Every board in the league had Goncalves lower, and that gap is the story.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. A real need, handled.
Cooper DeJean in Round 2, Pick 4 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 2 slot with a little surplus value in Troy Franklin. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick 67 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Cade Stover at the 78th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid up for Matt Goncalves at pick No. 100 when waiting would have done the job. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Beau Brade in the 139th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They let Jaylin Simpson come to them and pounced at No. 152. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board fumbled Kendall Milton all the way to pick No. 222, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
