You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with Tim Smith in pick No. 247. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The Lacy pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 29 they get a double-digit-sack hope at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Jihaad Campbell at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Tyleik Williams in the 79th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They will replay Kyren Lacy at the 146th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
O'Donnell Fortune at slot 203 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Joey Slackman in No. 236, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Tim Smith at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
