The board owed the Commanders one, and it paid up: Karene Reid, the No. 181 name on the board, sitting there at pick 247 like a gift left on the doorstep. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
The cost of the Mills reach is exactly the players who went right after him. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Bottom line, the swing picks will decide whether this ages well.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 29 they get a cornerstone up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Alfred Collins in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Rylie Mills at No. 79, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board had cheaper options than Dorian Strong at the 146th overall pick, and it noticed. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Roc Taylor at slot 203 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Thor Griffith at the 236th pick, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick 247 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
