Call it larceny. Ryan Fitzgerald sat on the board until pick 247, and the Commanders did not need to be asked twice.
Every board in the league had Dumervil lower, and that gap is the story. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Somehow T.J. Sanders was still sitting there in slot 61, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jared Ivey. The roster fit checks out.
Jack Bech at Round 4, Pick 33 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Steal is underselling it; Tommi Hill at pick No. 146 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board had cheaper options than Ty Hamilton at pick 203, and it noticed. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Thor Griffith at No. 236, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A wild overpay on Marcus Dumervil in the 246th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, Ryan Fitzgerald in pick No. 247, plain and simple. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
